What Is an eBay Bot? How Listing Alerts Work (UK Guide)

What an eBay bot does, what it does not do, and how resellers use one to catch underpriced Buy It Now listings.

An eBay bot, in reselling, is software that watches eBay for new listings matching a search you set up and alerts you within seconds of each one going live. It does the refreshing so you do not have to. It does not bid for you and it does not buy for you: when an alert lands, you open the listing and decide. Most people who build or sell one call it an eBay monitor, and the two terms mean the same thing.

Resellers use one for a simple reason. The listings worth buying are Buy It Now items priced under what they sell for, and those go to whoever opens them first, usually within minutes. eBay's own saved-search emails arrive long after that. This guide covers what a bot does and does not do, why speed matters, how saved searches compare, what to filter on, how to price what you find, whether it is allowed, who it suits, and how our own eBay bot works.

What an eBay bot does

A listing monitor has three jobs, and it does them over and over, all day.

  • Watch. It checks an eBay search continuously, newest first, rather than once an hour.
  • Match. Each new listing is tested against your filters: keywords, category, price, condition, format, location.
  • Deliver. A match is sent to you straight away, usually as a Discord message, with the photo, the price and a link.

That is the whole product. It replaces the habit of sitting on a search sorted by newly listed and pulling to refresh, and it watches several searches at once while you are at work or asleep, only interrupting you when something fits.

What an eBay bot does not do

Two things people often expect from an eBay bot are not part of a listing monitor, and it is worth being clear about both before you pay for one.

It does not bid or buy for you. The monitor finds the listing and tells you the second it goes live. What happens next is you: open it, check it, pay as yourself. The money for resellers is mostly in Buy It Now listings, where that speed is what counts.

It does not buy for you. On eBay the purchase is always yours to make, in your own account, in the eBay app. Our eBay monitor has no autobuy of any kind. That is different from our Vinted bot, where autobuy is a single tap: the member sees the alert, decides, taps, and our system completes the Vinted checkout in under a second. You can see the Vinted feed working on the free live monitor.

And it does not turn every alert into a profit. Whether a listing is a good buy depends on how well you set the filters and whether you know what the item sells for. More on both below.

Why speed matters on underpriced Buy It Now listings

On an auction, the final price is set by whoever is still bidding at the end, so being first to see it does not help much. Buy It Now is the opposite. The seller names a price, and the first person to pay it owns the item.

Sellers underprice for ordinary reasons: a house clearance, not knowing what the thing is worth, wanting it gone this weekend, or typing 52 instead of 152. When a console that sells for around £130 is listed at £52, several people are already waiting for it: buyers with the search saved, buyers refreshing, and buyers with monitors. The listing lasts as long as it takes one of them to notice, which in busy categories is minutes.

Speed only matters if you can act on it, so most members treat the monitor as something they respond to between tasks rather than watch. The guide to finding underpriced eBay listings covers which categories move fastest.

eBay saved searches vs an eBay bot

eBay lets you save any search and email you when new items match. It is free and built into the app, so it is the first thing most resellers try. Here is how it compares with a monitor on the things that decide whether you get the item.

Saved searches suit a collector who is happy to be told tomorrow. For resellers competing for mispriced stock, the batching is the problem. eBay saved search alerts explained covers how to set them up well and where they fall short.

What a good monitor lets you filter on

The filters are where a monitor earns its money. Alerts for everything are noise; alerts for exactly what you would buy at that price are a shopping list. Look for:

  • Keywords, including misspellings. Listings titled "addidas" or "air jordon" do not show up for buyers searching the correct spelling, so they go cheap.
  • Category. Keeps game listings out when you only want consoles.
  • Price range. The ceiling is the most important setting. Set it from the sold price, not the asking price.
  • Condition. New, used, or "for parts or not working", where untested electronics that usually work are listed.
  • Format. Buy It Now, auction, or both. For speed, Buy It Now.
  • Item location. UK only, unless you want import charges and a fortnight's wait.
  • Words that must appear. A whitelist on top of the search, such as "sealed" or a set number, cuts a wide search down to the listings you want.

A monitor that takes an eBay search link does all of this at once, because every filter on eBay's search page is carried inside the link. Build the search on eBay, check the results, then hand the link to the monitor.

How resellers price what they find

An alert gives you seconds to decide, so the pricing work happens when you set the monitor up. The method is the same in every category.

  1. Search the item on eBay and tick "Sold items". Look at the last few sales in the same condition, not the highest one.
  2. Subtract eBay's selling fees and the postage you will pay. The eBay fees guide walks through what a private and a business seller pay.
  3. Subtract the profit that makes the flip worth your time.
  4. What is left is your price ceiling. Put it in the monitor.
RP eBay monitor alert in Discord for a Nintendo 3DS XL console listed at £52.69, with a View Sold Products link and a View on eBay button
A real alert from a member's "3DS XL" monitor: listed at £52.69, with sold prices for the same console around £130. The sold-price link and the eBay button sit under the photo, so the decision happens without leaving Discord.

Once the ceiling comes from sold prices, you stop deliberating: anything the monitor sends is under your number, and the only question is whether the photos match the title. Members also use two shortcuts: a live Price Check command in our Discord that returns the average sold price for a title and condition, and Sole Scan in the RP app for trainers, which shows eBay, Laced and StockX prices by UK size.

Is an eBay bot allowed?

Short answer: it depends on what the tool does. We are not lawyers, so read eBay's terms yourself before you decide, but here is how a listing monitor actually works.

A listing monitor reads public listing pages, the same pages anyone can open in a browser without logging in. It does not use your eBay account, place bids or buy. When you act on an alert you open the listing and pay in your own account, exactly like any other buyer.

Your account is never automated, and that is the part that gets people into trouble on any marketplace. Tools that log in as you, bid for you or buy for you are a different thing, and those are the ones to steer clear of. Read eBay's terms yourself before you use any tool, and keep your buying and selling exactly as it would be without one. eBay's own saved searches are the route eBay provides; the trade-off is the delay described above.

One thing not in doubt: the income is taxable once you are buying to sell on. Everyone gets a £1,000 trading allowance per tax year; above it you register for Self Assessment and pay tax on profit, which is sales minus stock, fees, postage and tools. The side hustle tax section explains the deadlines and the free side hustle tax calculator gives you a figure.

Who an eBay bot is for, and who it is not for

It is for you if you know a niche and what things sell for in it, you can check your phone and act within a few minutes during the day, and you have £50 to £200 set aside so you can pay for an alert the moment it arrives. Consoles, trainers, LEGO, Pokémon and trading cards, camera gear and branded clothing are the categories members monitor most.
It is not for you if you are new to reselling and do not yet know what sells. A monitor amplifies judgement; it does not replace it. Start with the step-by-step starter page, the guide to reselling in the UK and eBay reselling for beginners, make a few sales by hand, and add the monitor once you know your numbers. It is also the wrong tool if you cannot respond to a notification until the evening.

If Vinted is where you buy most of your stock, our Vinted bot has a bigger head start on the app than anything we offer for eBay, plus one-tap autobuy. The eBay vs Vinted vs Depop comparison covers which platform suits which stock. Many members run both.

How the RP eBay monitor works

Our eBay monitor runs on our servers. There is nothing to install beyond Discord, which is where the alerts arrive, and most members run it entirely from their phone.

  1. Join and pick the role. After joining Resellers Paradise, select the Vinted & eBay Monitors role in Discord and the monitor panel appears with its buttons: Add Monitor, Edit Monitor, Remove Monitor and Price Check.
  2. Add a monitor. Build your search on eBay with every filter applied (category, condition, price range, Buy It Now or auction, free postage), then paste the search link. Add optional whitelist words that must appear in the title. Each member can run up to five monitors, so pick the niches you know best.
  3. Get the DM. Every new listing that matches is sent to your own Discord DMs, usually within seconds of appearing on eBay, with the photo, the price, a link to eBay's sold prices for the item and a View on eBay button. Monitors are personal; nobody else sees what you are watching for.
  4. Open and buy. The link opens in the eBay app. You check it and buy it as yourself. There is no bidding and no autobuy.

A few details. The monitor watches UK item locations only, and newest-listed sorting is applied for you. Price Check works from the same panel: pick a condition, type the title, add whitelist or blacklist words if you need them, and it returns the live average sold price. Two ready-made Pokémon channels, one for singles and one for sealed product, compare each new eBay listing to recent sold prices the moment it goes live and post the ones under market with the percentage shown. Pick the Pokémon role and they appear.

On speed, we want to be precise. Matching listings reach your DMs within seconds, and the exact gap moves with the category and how busy eBay is. On Vinted we publish a measured head start over the app itself; we make no equivalent claim for eBay. The eBay advantage is sharper filters, five searches watched at once, and delivery the moment a listing is indexed rather than in the next batched email.

The eBay monitor is not sold on its own. It is included in Resellers Paradise membership at £25 a month, everything included, cancel any time, with the Vinted bot and one-tap autobuy, the Depop monitor, discount and price-error monitors across 50+ UK retailers, in-store stock checkers, the RP app, the guides and a staff team in Discord every day alongside 1,500+ members. Frequently asked questions

What is an eBay bot?

In reselling, an eBay bot is software that watches eBay for new listings matching a search you set up and alerts you within seconds of each one going live, usually with the photo, the price and a link. It is also called an eBay monitor. It finds listings; it does not bid or buy. Resellers use one because underpriced Buy It Now items go to whoever opens them first.

Does an eBay bot bid or buy for me?

No. A listing monitor sends you the listing the second it goes live and you decide. The RP eBay monitor has no bidding and no autobuy; you open the alert in the eBay app and buy as yourself.

Are eBay bots allowed?

A monitor reads public listing pages that anyone can open without logging in, and it never touches your eBay account, bids or buys. The purchase is always made by you, in your own account, like any other buyer. Read eBay's terms yourself before using any tool; the ones to avoid are those that log in as you and act on your account.

How fast is an eBay bot compared with eBay saved searches?

eBay's saved-search emails arrive in batches, often an hour or more after a listing went live and sometimes longer, and every buyer with the same search gets the same email. A monitor sends each matching listing on its own, usually within seconds of it appearing. On a Buy It Now item priced well under its sold price, that gap is the difference between buying it and reading about it.

What should I search for with an eBay bot?

Listings other buyers miss: misspelled brand names, vague titles with a good brand in the photo, job lots and bundles, untested or spares-or-repair electronics, and sealed LEGO or Pokémon product listed at or under retail. Set the price ceiling below the sold price minus eBay's fees, postage and the profit you want, so that everything the monitor sends is worth opening.

How much does an eBay bot cost in the UK?

eBay's saved searches are free. Listing monitors are usually a monthly subscription. The RP eBay monitor is not sold on its own: it is included in Resellers Paradise membership at £25 a month, everything included, cancel any time, alongside the Vinted bot with one-tap autobuy, the Depop monitor, discount monitors across 50+ UK retailers and the RP app. Code WEBSITE takes 20% off your first month.
